When I was a little girl, I memorized license plate numbers all the time. It seems like I was always in the car running errands with my mom, which when you’re 8 or 9 years old is boring. So, I’d memorize the license plate number of the car parked next to us. I’d come up with scenarios that included bank robbers, shoplifters and all around bad guys using the vehicle in question as a getaway car. I was convinced that by giving the police the right license plate number, I would single-handedly solve the crime, and save the day. Then I’d imagine myself at an awards ceremony. A police officer would present a plaque to me in appreciation for my service to the community. Officers would marvel to reporters at my ability to spot bad guys and memorize license plate numbers at such a young age.
Of course, growing up in the suburbs of Northern California, nothing like this ever happened to me. In retrospect, I think these daydreams were the true start of my writing and public relations career!
I’ve been a freelance PR and communications specialist for over ten years and before that I worked in the graphic design industry. I attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, and majored in Sociology, with an emphasis in Feminist Studies.
